"MUSASHI66" (musashi66)

Wife is teaching a class in Grand Junction, and I had three hours to kill. Finally had the chance to try the X mode. It works well - it made me crawl super slow when I was on a really steep hill going down. Ground clearance is very adequate at 8.7" and the approach and departure angles worked really well on this terrain.

Awesome photos. Honestly thought you pulled them off google at first.

More clearance and better angles than a z71 canyorado...Good for the fozzy, bad for the canyorado

Thanks :). Photography is my hobby - between me and my dad, we must have $15k in photography gear. Figures that I shot these with an iPhone :)

Wow, didn't know that. I get the angles, but ground clearance? That doesn't make sense

Great photos! I’ve heard decent things about X-Mode, but I’ve never tried it myself. My 09 doesn’t have it; my mom’s 15 does, however.
I forgot the current generation XT has 8.7" of ground clearance like the X. The previous generation XT had 8.9" of ground clearance due to exhaust routing.

Honestly, I didn’t even know what would happen when I hit it - nothing changed other than the display on the dash. But then I went downhill and it was like “whooaa”. As for the clearance, I think it is 8.7", but it might be 8.9". Doesn’t really matter anyway :)
However, it is making me rethink lowering it 1.5" on pink STI springs. I would love to do that, but now I think clearance is nice too. Decisions, decisions....

X-Mode is basically simulated low-range with hill-descent control. It’s a neat little trick that’s fairly easily accomplished thanks to the CVT.
I occasionally go off-road on camping trails and the like, and appreciate the ground clearance. I feel that my 09 handles quite well for what it is, but I can see where some people would want it a bit lower. At one point, there were lowering springs available for the SH Foresters that lowered it 0.75". Enough to improve handling while still maintaining good ground clearance. I believe the company was Swift, though, I’m not sure if they have anything for the SJ Foresters.

have you ever taken the forester on soft sand?

Nope. However, I did it with my 2003 Civic Si and got hopelessly stuck :D. Luckily, some good ol’ boys were drinking beer close by, and they had a Silverado and some rope

Damn. I really like the forester as a potential offroad vehicle has the ground clearance but I’m worried about it getting stuck without locking difs

Not too many cars with real locking diffs at any decent price range. I think Foresters are as good as it gets for any AWD vehicle, and probably as good as most 4WD without locking diffs and similar clearance. Join SubaruForester.org and ask there, it is a very active forum.
